One hundred years ago Sunday, Henri DésiréLandru went on trial in Paris. His story captivated all of France and captured headlines around the world.

Princesses, actors, and famous authors vied for spots in the clogged spectator gallery.

About a quarter of the seats were filled by women who just wanted to get a glimpse of the accused lady killer.

He was short, bony, and bald with a long scraggly, pointed beard and vacant dark eyes. He was accused of murdering women, chopping up their bodies, and burning the pieces in a kitchen stove.

Nevertheless, Landru was an object of desire.

“Landru has an uncanny power over women.

It is said he fascinates them. They become powerless,” the Daily News noted in July 1921.

Newspapers called him the Bluebeard of Paris or Gambais, a nod to the French folktale about an aristocrat who made a hobby of knocking off wives.

Gambais was 35 miles from Paris. Landru had a house there, called Villa Tric. It was here that most
