Anita Scott Coleman was an author who published poems, essays, and short stories. After her parents met in Texas, they moved to Sonora, Mexico where Coleman was eventually born.

  • After her birth, her family moved to New Mexico where she was raised on a ranch. In Silver City she attended the New Mexico Teachers College and subsequently became a schoolteacher until , when she married printer and photographer James Harold Coleman.

    It was then that she began her writing career. Despite the fact that she never lived anywhere near Harlem, Coleman is considered an important author of the Harlem Renaissance, as her works written during this time were published in journals that also published a majority of other Harlem Renaissance writers, including The Crisis, The Messenger, and Opportunity: Journal of Negro Life.
